Chlorine Safe Handling (CSH)
Learn how to safely operate and maintain swimming pool disinfection systems that use chlorine and hypochlorite products.
This one-day course provides practical information on chlorination and hypochlorination systems, equipment maintenance, regulations, safe handling procedures and industry best practices. Participants will gain knowledge they can apply to the safe operation and maintenance of their own aquatic facilities.

- How chlorine and hypochlorite disinfect pool water
- How to calculate and monitor chlorine levels

- How to spot maintenance issues and handle chemicals safely

Pool Operator 1
Designed for current and aspiring pool operators, Pool Operator 1 provides the foundational knowledge needed to safely and effectively operate a swimming pool. Learn the essentials of water circulation, pool calculations, chlorine chemistry, water balance, water testing and safe chemical handling.
This course introduces the knowledge and practical skills needed to operate and maintain pools in accordance with B.C.’s Pool Regulation and Guidelines for Pool Operations. It is relevant to staff working in municipal and commercial aquatic facilities.
What You’ll Learn
- Interpret and apply B.C Pool Regulations and Guidelines
- Calculate key operational metrics
- Operate and Maintain circulation, filtration, and sanitation
- Handle and store chemicals safely
- Test water quality and keep accurate records for inspections

Pool Operator 2
Designed for experienced pool operators, Pool Operator 2 builds on the foundational knowledge gained in Pool Operator 1 with advanced principles, problem-solving techniques and practical approaches to swimming pool operations.
The course explores advanced chemistry, energy conservation, troubleshooting, new technology, risk management and maintenance systems. Participants will also review current health regulations and their impact on pool operations, including the development and use of a Pool Safety Plan.
Upon successful completion of the final exam, participants receive an RFABC Pool Operator Level 2 certificate, recognized by municipalities across British Columbia. This advanced course builds on Level 1 and supports the training recommended in B.C.’s Guidelines for Pool Operations for larger or more complex facilities.

Prerequisites
Participants must have successfully completed RFABC Pool Operator 1 or hold an equivalent Pool Operator1 certification, such as BCRPA.
All Pool Operator 2 participants will also be asked to complete a Pool 1 knowledge self-assessment before the course begins. This self-assessment helps confirm readiness for the course and identify any Pool 1 topics that may need review.
