Building Service Worker 1
Build the foundational skills needed for professional custodial work through hands-on, practical training in cleaning techniques, workplace safety and effective work practices.
Designed for those entering the custodial industry or looking to strengthen their skills, this course provides the knowledge and practical experience needed to maintain safe, clean and welcoming facilities.
What You’ll Learn
- WHMIS and workplace safety
- Ladder safety and proper lifting techniques
- Hand washing and personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Safe handling of body fluids and sharps
- Hantavirus awareness
- Dry and wet cleaning techniques
- pH and water-based cleaning
- Disinfectants, neutral and general-purpose cleaners
- Microfibre cloths and proper solution dilution
- Hard floor care
- Green cleaning practices
- Organizing and managing daily custodial work
- Identifying cleaning needs before they become concerns
- Professionalism and effective workplace habits

Prerequisites
Participants must have sufficient written and verbal English proficiency to participate in the course and complete the required assessments.

Upon successful completion of the course, including skills demonstration and a written exam, participants receive a Building Service Worker 1 certificate.
This certificate is a prerequisite or preferred qualification for employment with many school boards, colleges, recreation centres and other institutions.

Building Service Worker 2
Build on your Building Service Worker1 skills with advanced training in hard floor care.
Recreation and sport facilities include a wide variety of floor surfaces — from highly technical flooring systems to surfaces designed to withstand heavy traffic. This two-day course provides the knowledge and practical skills needed to properly maintain and protect these surfaces.
Approximately 60% of the course is classroom instruction and 40% is hands-on practical training. Participants will put their learning into practice by mopping, scrubbing and applying floor finish.

- Floor machine use and care
- Pads and brushes
- Maintenance cycles
- Routine and periodic floor care
- Buffing and burnishing
- Deep scrub and recoat procedures
- Stripping and recoating procedures
